Dr. Daniel Ageze, MD, MPH
Dr. Daniel Ageze, MD, MPH
Addiction Medicine & Psychiatry
Dr. Daniel Ageze believes that true healing begins by recognizing the dignity and worth of every person. While addiction and mental illness often affect every aspect of life, he believes recovery is about more than symptom management—it is about helping people rediscover hope, purpose, healthy relationships, and the capacity to flourish. His approach combines evidencebased medicine with compassionate, whole-person care that considers the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of health. Born in Ethiopia and raised in Seattle, Washington, Dr. Ageze's life has been shaped by both cultures and by a deep appreciation for service. He attended the University of Washington before earning his medical degree in Virginia. Drawn to caring for patients with complex medical and behavioral health needs, he completed residency training and pursuing additional training and board certification in Preventive Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and Lifestyle medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He also earned a Master of Public Health from San Diego State University, where he focused on health promotion and behavioral science. In addition to serving patients at I AM Recovery, Dr. Ageze continues to practice addiction medicine and psychiatry at Neighborhood Healthcare and serves as a researcher at UCSD. His research has focused on cannabis, public health, safety, impaired driving, and substance use, with multiple peer-reviewed publications examining the health impacts of cannabis policy and use. His work reflects a commitment to bringing sound science into conversations that directly affect patients, families, and communities. Throughout his career, Dr. Ageze has cared for individuals in outpatient clinics, detoxification programs, and residential treatment settings. These experiences have reinforced his belief that lasting recovery cannot be achieved through medication or therapy alone. Healing requires understanding each person's story, addressing the factors that contribute to illness, and partnering with patients to build a sustainable path toward recovery. Although he was born into the Orthodox Christian faith, Dr. Ageze stepped away from the Church during his college years as he searched for deeper answers about truth, purpose, and the human person. That journey led him to study philosophy, comparative religion, apologetics, and the historical foundations of Christianity before ultimately returning to the Orthodox Christian Church with a renewed and well-informed conviction. His faith continues to shape how he understands healing—not as something that simply removes disease, but as a process of restoring the whole person. Dr. Ageze founded I AM Recovery with the vision of creating a practice where clinical excellence, compassion, and faith-informed care coexist. Patients of every background and belief are welcomed with respect and dignity. His hope is that each person who walks through the doors of I AM Recovery experiences not only excellent medical care, but also genuine hope, meaningful restoration, and the confidence that lasting healing is possible.
Dr. Nebiyu Shukur, MD
Dr. Nebiyu Shukur, MD
Emergency Medicine & Addiction Medicine
Dr. Nebiyu Shukur believes that every person is created with inherent dignity in the image of God, and that addiction treatment must care for the whole person — body, mind, soul, family, and community. His approach to addiction medicine is rooted in compassion, medical science, and a deep concern for the spiritual wounds that often accompany substance use and compulsive behaviors. Born in Ethiopia, Dr. Shukur came to the United States at an early age and completed middle school and high school in Virginia. He went on to study biochemistry at Virginia Tech. During his senior year, while reflecting on the repetitive cycle of life and searching for deeper meaning, he became drawn to the simple yet profound teachings of the Orthodox Desert Fathers. This search led him to take his Orthodox Christian faith seriously and shaped his understanding of healing, suffering, repentance, and restoration. Dr. Shukur later attended medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School and chose to specialize in Emergency Medicine. He completed his residency training at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Through his work in the emergency department, he witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of substance use disorder on individuals, families, and communities. Many encounters were brief, but deeply impactful with moments where patients were suffering physically, emotionally, spiritually, and socially, yet often had limited access to the sustained support they needed. His passion for addiction medicine grew through both his clinical experience and the personal impact of addiction on families and communities. He became convinced that people suffering from addiction need more than brief stabilization; they need compassionate, comprehensive care that recognizes the physiological changes of addiction while also addressing the emotional, relational, and spiritual dimensions of healing. This conviction led Dr. Shukur to help found I AM Recovery Inc, with the mission of walking alongside individuals and families affected by addiction. His hope is to help restore those suffering from addiction of any kind to wholeness, dignity, and renewed purpose through evidence-based treatment, compassionate support, and faith-informed care when desired.
